Chrome OS: When the Web moved to software

Last July, Google announced something that had been rumored for some time: an operating system itself .
Tuesday, 20 November, showed the first screenshots and as source code is available . As with the Chrome browser, Google claims that any programmer to take part in this ambitious project and contribute their bit.
While there is already Android , based on Linux and designed for next generation mobile devices, Google has decided to establish a second operating system and focused entirely different netbooks .
What will Google Chrome OS?
To begin, Chrome OS break with the duality that has prevailed for years in computing: hardware + software. Not quite, because Chrome is OS software, but is limited to the drivers to communicate with the machine (hardware), the core system and some APIs, and of course, the Chrome Web browser, which will be the hub of Chrome OS.
Google is so what we do with our computer has a Web application as a protagonist. Read mail, surf the net, watching videos, listening to music, talking to friends and family, even writing a text or edit our photos. Everything is done via Chrome Web OS. If Google has managed to be the homepage of many users, now your browser / operating system will be on our computers.
What advantages does this have?
First, we will not need a powerful computer. A Web browser does not require excessive resources, so Chrome OS is ideal for portable netbook type, you can take anywhere and have great autonomy. This is precisely the intention of Google Chrome install OS on netbooks with SSDs, they will enable much faster than running Windows, Mac or Linux.
Second advantage, goodbye to malware. How can affect a virus or trojan to a Web browser if behind is not an operating system that can spread? Third advantage, our work will be supported on the network. That is, if your computer fails, you will not lose your data, it will be on the internet. Mail, documents, photographs, videos, … You will not have to worry about running out of battery power before you save a document. On the other hand, your files will be accessible from any computer, to be visible from a browser.
And the disadvantages?
Obviously, leave all your files in Google’s hands can be frightening. What if the server where my documents are saved suffers an accident and lost? What Google will use them? How I have privacy?
Moreover, the philosophy is quite limiting Chrome OS users accustomed to using certain programs not available on the Web. And although every day there are new high-quality Web applications, its performance compared with programs installed on a computer far enough. Not to mention video games.
Another aspect to consider is the dependence on a computer with Internet OS Chrome. Without the Internet it will still be discarded appliances, because you can not do anything without Web browser. Although Chrome OS makes use of Gears technology for offline Web applications using the dependence will continue.
Conclusions
Google has surprised everybody. Rumors have been rampant since the first mention of Chrome OS, and yet Google has managed to teach something new. True, there are already similar projects, as EyeOS, yet still rely on traditional operating system back.
Chrome OS achieves a safe working environment (free from harmful software), fast (by centralizing its operations into a single application, browser, and when operating in SSD) and available to everyone, because the objective is to install on netbooks, more expensive than desktops and laptops.
What is the next step?
Chrome OS is not yet available, at least not for the average user. If you are a developer or have programming skills, you can compile the code .
In principle, Chrome OS will be released next year, probably pre-installed on laptops, but probably have images available for installation. Indeed, now flowing through the network and a version for testing in VMware.
